Support for animal shelters: Thanks for over 375,000 euros Press release

The German Animal Welfare Federation would like to thank the customers of Fressnapf stores and the Fressnapf Group for supporting animal shelters in Germany. As part of the "Tierisch engagiert" customer campaign, over 700,000 donation tags were purchased for a good cause in all European Fressnapf stores and online between October and December 2022. The German Animal Welfare Federation will receive a total of 375,151 euros from the proceeds for its "Animal Shelter Emergency Aid", with which the umbrella organization ensures acute aid for its affiliated animal shelters and animal welfare associations.

"We are overwhelmed by the large sum that has been raised for the animal shelters! The situation in charitable animal welfare is currently dramatic, and animal shelters are more dependent than ever on financial help. We are all the more grateful to Fressnapf and everyone who has helped," says Thomas Schröder, President of the German Animal Welfare Federation.

Many animal shelters are currently overcrowded or have had to impose admission freezes, particularly as a result of the coronavirus-related pet boom. At the same time, rising energy prices, higher costs for pet food and the adjustment of the scale of fees for vets as well as the increase in the minimum wage are pushing animal shelters to their financial limits. Most animal shelters have not been doing well for years because the municipalities, which usually outsource the care of found animals to the local animal shelters, do not cover the costs of this mandatory municipal task. As a result, reserves could not be built up and animal shelter buildings - often old buildings - could not be renovated or expanded in an energy-efficient manner for years. The current situation is hitting animal shelters particularly hard.

As the umbrella organization for over 740 animal welfare associations and around 550 animal shelters, the German Animal Welfare Federation helps in emergency situations wherever possible. It steps in financially quickly and unbureaucratically when animal shelters find themselves in acute need. However, the umbrella organization itself is also dependent on financial support in order to be able to continue assisting animal shelters. Find out more at www.tierheime-helfen.de.
