Financial incentives only for real improvements - Commentary Federal program for the conversion of animal husbandry Commentary

Thomas Schröder, President of the German Animal Welfare Federation, comments on the key points published today by the BMEL for a federal program to promote the conversion of animal husbandry:

“More animal welfare does not come for free. The Federal Government is called upon to create financial incentives for farmers who go beyond the statutory animal husbandry standards. We therefore very much welcome the fact that Federal Minister Cem Özdemir is now taking this step. The conversion of agricultural livestock farming is only possible through a targeted funding policy. However, it is also clear that one billion euros for conversion and the more cost-intensive running costs will not be enough in the long term. And it must be clear that only genuine improvements for the animals should be funded. We are pushing for clarity and more animal welfare.”
