Why it is important to register your petFINDEFIX - The pet register of the German Animal Welfare Federation

Escaped, not returned home overnight or lost: thousands of animals go missing in Germany every year - a nightmare for all pet owners. But if you have your pet identified and then register it with FINDEFIX, the pet register of the German Animal Welfare Federation, has a good chance of seeing their pet again.

Whether it's a dog that gets scared and runs away or a cat that breaks through a locked window: Lost animals are a regular occurrence. If the beloved animal can no longer be found, the worry is great. Animals registered with FINDEFIX can be easily identified and returned to their family.

What is FINDEFIX?

FINDEFIX is a free service offered by the German Animal Welfare Federation and one of the largest pet registries in Germany. We have been helping to return pets to their owners for over 40 years. This makes us the oldest and only non-profit service of its kind in Germany. Our work is not profit-oriented - we put you and your pet first. We use our network to locate an animal that has been reported missing.

How does FINDEFIX work?

  • To be able to register your pet with FINDEFIX, it should be unmistakably identified. The German Animal Welfare Federation recommends identification by means of a tiny microchip under the skin, which can be quickly inserted in any veterinary practice.
  • Vets inject a transponder using a microchip the size of a grain of rice. The pain on insertion is comparable to that of a vaccination.
  • A 15-digit number is stored on the chip, the coding is individual and is used worldwide. You can use this to register your pet with FINDEFIX. This step is extremely important, as the microchip alone is no help in the event of a search.
  • Registration is simple and free of charge at www.findefix.com. You will then receive a confirmation with all the important documents. Dog owners also receive a sticker for the collar.
  • The search runs professionally thanks to the good networking with all animal welfare organizations and animal shelters that are affiliated with the German Animal Welfare Federation.
  • Vets, animal shelters or even the police and fire department can read the chip if your animal is found and FINDEFIX can then quickly identify you as the owner.
  • We also protect animals that go missing on vacation by exchanging information with databases all over the world.

Registering avoids grief

In Germany, 54 percent of dogs and cats are not registered in a pet register - that is more than every second animal. Without identification and registration, it is almost impossible to identify them if they go missing. This is why countless animals found in animal shelters in Germany wait in vain to be returned home. It can happen quickly that an animal escapes, for example on the way to a vacation. Even indoor cats can escape through a crack in the door or a window. Fear of such eventualities should not dominate your everyday life. By registering, you can ensure in just a few steps that animal shelters, vets and authorities can find you immediately via FINDEFIX if they have taken in your pet.
